Reducing emissions and Waste
In 2023 we continue with the philosophy to “do the right thing”. As we closed out 2022 our 4th Toitū Envirocare audit was undertaken which allowed us to see where we are tracking in the global efforts to cut carbon emissions.
Since we started our Toitū journey we have been able to reduce our emissions by 16.3%, despite 15% growth. Our emissions per manhours (of approx. 300,000pa), has seen a 20% reduction overall. We have been able to achieve this by making some significant changes to our waste management protocols, the introduction of E-Road to our entire fleet, and the gradual transition to hybrid cars.
We have now planted over 50,000 native and exotic trees on our conservation properties. As a result, we are currently 50% carbon positive – meaning that for every tonne of carbon that we emit, we sequester 1.5 tonnes.

Eroad

Eroad was presented as a Fleet Management solution to APS in 2020. Installing Eroad in our fleet of light to medium vehicles, APS was provided with several elements of fleet management that could be refined and improved. In 2022 APS’ fleet travelled 2,137,325kms over 54,000 hours, consuming 206,000 litres of fuel. Continued growth means these figures will rise. Utilizing Eroad data APS can categorize and focus on safety, compliance, environmental impact and efficiencies.
- Safety:
APS’ commitment to staff safety extends to their safe handling of company vehicles. With Eroad APS can measure driver performance. Identifying how many km’s and hours driven. This information also provides APS with any overspeed, harsh braking and sharp cornering events. Monthly analysis demonstrates APS recorded an 80% reduction in overspeed events. In Aug 2020, there were 1700 overspeed events compared to 350 in December 2022.
- Compliance:
Managing APS’ fleet Scheduled Repair & Maintenance based on APS’ service parameters allows a proactive approach with Eroad. Advanced communication with staff and suppliers ensures we minimize downtime. Additional Eroad Apps, Eroad Inspect and Eroad Asset tracking allow APS to perform our own checks.
- Environmental:
Distance and Fuel consumption metrics provide, APS “CO2-e kg”. Important information for an organization who works hard to sustain their carbon positive status.
